QUICK ACTIONS
JEWELRY CARE
HOW SHOULD I STORE MY JEWELRY?
- Storage is important. Always store your pieces -gemstones in particular individually enclosed so that they don't rub together, scratch, or tangle. Ourenclosed pouches can be used to keep your pieces separate.
- Other tips:
- Keep jewellery in a dark, cool, and dry place. Sterling silver in particular naturally oxidizes over time when exposed to air, and eventually tarnishes, and the best prevention for this is to store it in a sealed bag or airtight box when not being worn. We recommend occasional cleaning of your silver jewelry to maintain shine and keep oxidation at bay.
- Don't place jewelry in direct sunlight as prolonged exposure can cause gemstones to fade and lose their color.
- Keep creams and sprays well away from your jewelry pieces as they are particularly susceptible to damage from the effects of chemicals in perfume, hairspray, make-up, nail polish remover, body ois, and sunscreen deodorant.
- If you live in a humid climate, always store your jewelry with the enclosed packet of desiccant crystals to help avoid any tarnishing.
- Keep chains fastened at the clasp to avoid tangling.
HOW SHOULD I CLEAN MY JEWELRY?
- Clean your jewelry carefully with the soft, non-abrasive, and lint-free cloth or chamois that's enclosed in your order, Doing this occasionally will help to maintain or bring back its shine. If necessary, you can use a mild washing-up liquid with warm water and a soft toothbrush, then rinse with clean water and pat dry with a soft cloth.
- Avoid using 'dip-polish or abrasive jewelry cleaners as these contain harsh chemicals and can destroy your jewelry over time.
HOW CAN I PROTECT MY JEWELRY WHILE I'M WEARING IT?
- We don't recommend swimming or showering while wearing your jewellery, and removing rings when washing hands.
- Chlorine, salt water, and freshwater can damage precious metals and gemstones by dulling or eroding them. Gold and silver-plated pieces are particularly susceptible to damage from chlorine, which can permanently damage or discolor them. Soapy water when bathing and showering can also leave a thin film, which makes the metal seem dull.
- Some stones such as lapis lazuli can also be quite porous and shouldn't be left immersed in water for too long. Liquids and oils can seep into the germs through the tiny cracks between the crystals, causing permanent discoloration and damage, Because of this we also don't recommend wearing porous gems to a beach or hot climate.
JEWELRY MATERIALS
18CT GOLD & ROSE GOLD VERMEIL
- Most of our jewelry is handcrafted in 18ct gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may' ). But what does it mean, and how is it different from gold plated?
- In simplest terms, jewelry crafted in gold vermeil has a thicker layer of gold added to the base of sterling silver (the thickness of the gold must be a minimum of 2.5 microns to be classed as gold vermeil). All gold vermeil jewelry in the US is also stamped with the '925' mark to indicate the sterling silver purity.
- The plating process is different as well - gold vermeil is plated with a process known as 'electrolysis', making the jewelry very durable.
- All our pieces are tested by the Assay Office (which tests the purity of precious metals), as required by law.
18CT GOLD PLATED
- We use gold-plated brass metal with a layer of 18ct gold in 2-micron thickness to craft the majority of our statement jewelry. A layer of anti-tarnish is added on top for good measure.
- The reason we use gold plating instead of gold vermeil for our bigger and bolder jewelry is mainly down to affordability - gold plating allows us to keep prices of these pieces at an affordable level, whereas using gold vermeil would make them much more expensive.
- Gold-plated pieces are still incredibly durable - plated with exactly the same process as our gold vermeil pieces, just with slightly thinner layer of gold added to brass instead of sterling silver.
STERLING SILVER
- All our sterling silver jewelry is rhodium-plated. This adds a bit of luxury (a member of the platinum family) provides a strong and protective layer against tarnishing and adds luster and durability. Rhodium plating gives these silver pieces their shine and ensures they don't scratch, dent, or corrode.
- All sterling silver pieces are also stamped with the '925' mark -indicating the purity of the metal - and are tested at the Assay Office.
STERLING SILVER PLATED
- Some of our silver jewelry is plated with sterling silver on brass, and this is what differentiates it from our rhodium-plated sterling silver pieces.
- These pieces have a layer of anti-tarnish added on top and are still incredibly durable as they're plated with the same process as oursterling silver pieces (but not marked with the '925' stamp as they are not 92.5% pure silver).
CUBIC IIRCONIA OR CZ
- We use cubic zirconia stones in some of our jewelry for the luster they give without the pricetag of diamonds.
- They're a durable and affordable alternative to the diamond look and bring a beautiful shine to more delicate pieces.
BAHATEE GEMSTONES
- We source semi-precious gemstones and crystals for our jewelry for their clarity and depth of color.
- Our team then creates distinct shapes and hand cuts to make all Bahateegemstones unique for us.
- Each gemstone has a special color, birthplace, and story. Some are thought to hold special meanings and powers, and all of them share a common beauty.
